I spent 18 years in the Navy as a communications tech on Trident submarines. Three hundred feet down, cut off from the surface, “we’ll fix it later” isn’t an option — the systems either work or people don’t come home. That’s the standard I’ve held every system to since.

I’ve worked in IT since 1978. Started in the Navy, where I also taught electronics and computer science — turns out explaining how systems work to people who’ve never touched them is good practice for a second career in small-business IT. I’ve since served as a CIO and a CTO, and now I run DataStream, doing on land what I used to do at sea: making sure the systems people depend on actually hold up when it counts.

How I work

I look after the IT, the security and the web for a small number of small businesses and nonprofits — the kind of organization that cannot absorb a bad week the way a larger one can. No jargon, no upsell, no vendor-speak. You get a straight answer about what is actually wrong and what it actually takes to put right.
